THE SENTENCE AND LACK OF HYDRATION
The top layer of the skin (horn layer) ensures that moisture can not just evaporate. A properly functioning horny layer regulates the right amount of water release
(TEWL trans epidermal waterloss).
The horny layer consists of flat, dead horn cells surrounded by special skin-like substances such as fats, ceramides, cholesterol and urea. These substances ensure that fat and moisture can be retained so that the skin remains soft and supple. In dry skin these substances are insufficiently present and the skin can dry out easily
When the skin is dry, the skin itself produces extra lipids to fill the deficit and thus restore the skin barrier. By rubbing the skin with a protective cream, the skin is able to fully recover. In addition, it is essential that the relative ratio of lipids (ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids) in the cream is good and that the skin is not simply 'smeared'.
Many products against dry skin close the horny layer instead of moisturizing the horny layer.
